History of Cary’s Baptist Church

The Cary’s Baptist Church of Tabb, Virginia, was organized on June 25, 1881 under the leadership of Rev. Cary Hopson of Hampton, Virginia.  Meetings were held under a “Hoy tree” near the church’s present location until a frame building was constructed in 1882.  The first members of the church were brothers William Porter, Mercury Lamb, John Hayes, Willie Ash, Curtis Combs, Peter Banks, and Josiah Combs.  Mrs. Pollie Banks and Alice Hayes were the only sisters who worshipped with them at that time.

Upon the death of Rev. Hopson, Rev. John Lovett, a teacher, assumed the pastorship.

Cary’s next two ministers were Rev. Thad W. Nettles and Rev. A. A. Hudgins.  Rev. Nettles served until his demise in 1920.  At that time, Pastor Hudgins was chosen to continue the ministry.

For the twenty-four years that followed the followed, the church continued to prosper under the leadership of Pastors J. D. Black (seven years), Y. B. Williams (five years) and J. D. Atkinson (twelve years).

In the mid-fifties, Rev. T.O. Wilson accepted ministerial duties at Cary’s where he served for four and a half years.

The Rev. Albert Glenn Graves succeeded Rev. Wilson in 1960.Rev. Graves served as pastor for 5 years and nine months.

From October 1966 to July 1988, the church functioned under the pastorship of Rev.  James I. Bridgers.  Under his leadership, he started a building fund which made it possible to build the present church.

Elected in September 1990, Rev. Bobby D. Williams served as our pastor for twelve years.

On December 4, 2004 , the church body was blessed to receive a new Pastor and First Lady, Rev. R. A. Watson and Mrs. Pasty Watson.
