History
of Cary’s
Baptist Church
The
Cary’s Baptist Church of Tabb, Virginia, was organized on June 25, 1881
under the leadership of Rev. Cary Hopson of Hampton, Virginia.
Meetings were held under a “Hoy tree” near the church’s
present location until a frame building was constructed in 1882.
The first members of the church were brothers William Porter,
Mercury Lamb, John Hayes, Willie Ash, Curtis Combs, Peter Banks, and
Josiah Combs. Mrs. Pollie
Banks and Alice Hayes were the only sisters who worshipped with them at
that time.
Upon the
death of Rev. Hopson, Rev. John Lovett, a teacher, assumed the pastorship.
Cary’s next two ministers were Rev. Thad W. Nettles and Rev. A. A.
Hudgins. Rev. Nettles served
until his demise in 1920. At
that time, Pastor Hudgins was chosen to continue the ministry.
For the
twenty-four years that followed the followed, the church continued to
prosper under the leadership of Pastors J. D. Black (seven years), Y. B.
Williams (five years) and J. D. Atkinson (twelve years).
In the
mid-fifties, Rev. T.O. Wilson accepted ministerial
duties at Cary’s where he served for four and a half years.
The Rev.
Albert Glenn Graves succeeded Rev. Wilson in 1960.Rev. Graves
served as pastor for 5 years and nine months.
From
October 1966 to July 1988, the church functioned under the pastorship
of Rev. James I. Bridgers.
Under his leadership, he started a building fund which made it
possible to build the present church.
Elected in September 1990, Rev. Bobby D. Williams served as our pastor
for twelve years.
On
December 4, 2004
, the church body was blessed to receive a new Pastor and First Lady,
Rev. R. A. Watson and Mrs. Pasty Watson.
